An Application of Activated Alumina Particles for the Recovery of Proteins

Abstract
Adsorption/desorption of bovine serum albumin (BSA) on activated alumina particles was examined. BSA adsorbed on the activated alumina particles. The adsorption of BSA on the alumina particles was accomplished within 5 minutes. The adsorption density of BSA on the alumina particle R.W. was 7.1 §· BSA/g alumina particle. The adsorption of BSA on the alumina particles decreased with increases in pH and the concentration of sodium chloride. In the presence of 5 mM potassium citrate, BSA did not adsorb on the alumina particles at pH above 5.5. Adsorbed BSA could he desorbed and recovered from the alumina particles by increasing the concentration of salt up to 100 mM of potassium citrate or 130 mM of potassium phosphate.
